*ALL SURGERIES DISCUSSED HERE ARE PERFORMED BY A COSMETIC SURGEON

A key defining factor of beauty and attractiveness is the appearance of the eyes. A common Mandarin expression is 眼睛是灵魂之窗 (loosely translated as “The eyes are the windows to the soul”). An impression of big, wide, open, alert and fresh-looking eyes (有神的眼睛) is a valued beauty trait.

However, around half of East Asians are born with single eyelids. Single eyelids seem to give eyes a very tired look, and if one were to dwell deeper into the subconscious assessment, some people may interpret small single eyelid eyes as the person showing an expression of disdain, suspicion and distrust.

Double Eyelid Surgery (a.k.a Upper Blepharoplasty) is a very commonly asked for plastic surgical procedure in Asians. According to the American Society Of Plastic Surgeons, it’s one of the most common surgeries for Asians in the U.S. In 2013 in the USA, 6.2 percent of procedures Asians sought were blepharoplasties. In Asia, it is probably even more likely the most common plastic surgical procedure.

There are 2 methods: Stitching (Non-Incisional) and Incisional.

Stitching Upper Blepharoplasty has lesser downtime and takes a shorter time to perform. It involves dissolvable stitches made (around 3 per eyelid) to create the special fold called the Double Eyelid. It is however not permanent and can last around 2-5 years. It is also more suitable for younger patients (without saggy loose excess skin and fat).

Incisional Upper Blepharoplasty, as the name goes, involves the cosmetic surgeon, using a scalpel to create the fold. During the surgery process, excess skin and fat will be removed. Sometimes, weak muscles can also be tightened in the process. It can also correct ptosis of the eye (if used for this indication – part of the fees can be claimed under medical insurance). It is a permanent process and cannot be reversed.
